Foreigners also have to file taxes

Foreigners also have to file taxes

Don't think that tax filing is only for Malaysians! Foreigners who stay and work in Malaysia for more than 182 days in a year are taxable under the law and must file and pay taxes to the Inland Revenue Department.

Conversely, under the Income Tax Act 1967, only income derived from working in Malaysia is subject to tax return, while income from working abroad is not subject to tax return. Example: Malaysians working in Singapore who have already filed, and paid taxes locally are no longer required to file and pay taxes with the Inland Revenue Department to avoid double taxation

More details:

If the taxpayer is employed by an overseas company and does not work in Malaysia and only provides overseas services, then the taxpayer's income will be classified as overseas income and will not be required to file and pay taxes in Malaysia.

However, if the taxpayer is working for an overseas company by phone or online in Malaysia, it means that his income is derived from Malaysia and must file and pay taxes.

Malaysian citizens who use the money earned overseas to buy property in Malaysia to collect rents are required to pay tax.
